LUK’s Advocacy and Advisory Board Hosts Legislative Breakfast

FITCHBURG – LUK’s Advocacy and Advisory Board (LAAB) and Beth Barto, CEO hosted a Legislative Breakfast this Friday, October 13th, to introduce local and state representatives to LUK’s policy standpoints and discuss pressing local matters. In attendance were Representative Natalie M. Higgins, Representative Michael Kushmerek, Senator John Cronin, Fitchburg Mayor Stephen DiNatale, a representative of Senator Robyn Kennedy, and others involved in local and state politics.

Through questions posed by LUK’s Peer Leaders and references to drafted bills, legislators, LAAB members, and other guests had thoughtful discussions about housing security and rent control, firearm regulation, and mental health parity through behavioral health funding. Legislators carefully considered every aspect of these tougher topics to deliver insightful and honest perspectives on how our Massachusetts State government is handling situations. They provided realistic timelines, specific budget numbers, and a glimpse into how controversial legislation is considered and discussed in the legislature. Overall, the breakfast was a productive, informative, and worthwhile event.

LAAB serves as LUK’s key resource to guide the agency’s stance regarding controversial social issues and to promote public policy advocacy to advance and uphold the agency’s Sense of Mission. Our policy stances focus on Racial Equality, Mental Health Parity, Child Rights, and Housing Security.
