Lunar New Year

February 10

The Lunar New Year, which is celebrated differently in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean cultures, begins today! In Chinese cultures, the Spring Festival is celebrated with a range of activities like dragon dances, lion dances, and temple fairs. In Korean traditions the Seollal festival which means “year of age” is celebrated with the ritual of ancestor worship, but there are other activities including eating together and “Sebae,” where children and students bow to their elders and receive small gifts of money. The term Têt, short for Têt Nguyen Dan, in Vietnamese culture refers to the “first morning of the first day of the new period.”
